Healthcare providers are under enormous pressure to protect their employees while caring for patients with the Ebola virus or other, more common infectious diseases. Government agencies around the world are issuing directives designed to keep front line workers safe and facilities are responding by updating protocols, training staff and acquiring additional resources.

As designated Ebola treatment centers and all facilities continue their preparedness towards infection control, they are urged to understand the role furniture can play in the spread of infection. Items such as medical stools and patient chairs that have been designated for use in high-risk areas, including doffing areas, can and should have enhancements that minimize the risk and spread of diseases.

These enhancements include:

Seamless

The use of seamless upholstery prevents pathogens and microbes from becoming trapped and multiplying in the seams of furniture. This is an added safeguard against the spread of communicable diseases.

Puncture and Tear Resistant

Durable upholstery that resists punctures and tears ensures the interior of the furniture will not be contaminated.

Locking Casters and Hands Free Adjustment

Enhancements to furniture used in doffing areas enable healthcare workers to easily and safely remove their Personal Protection Equipment (PPE). Having an appropriate place to sit, that can be easily cleaned and disinfected, where healthcare workers can remove boot covers is important.

Color

The color of furniture can play an important role in more than just aesthetics. Selecting a different color for furniture used in isolation areas helps easily identify where furniture belongs and safeguards its proper handling.

The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends regular cleaning and disinfecting of patient care areas, even in the absence of visible contamination. A light colored upholstery will allow blood and other fluids to be easily seen, easing the cleaning process.

Selecting the right furniture with the right features will make a difference in all facilities.
